European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
