Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
